What does a temporary crown look like?

A temporary crown looks natural and similar to a natural tooth. Despite the fact that it is temporary, today’s dentists do everything as aesthetically as possible, taking into account the shade of the patient’s teeth.

When is a temporary crown placed on an implant?

A temporary crown is placed on the implant when the implant has already taken root. This is necessary so that the crown and implant are firmly connected to each other later, and also to eliminate the risk of displacement.

What is a temporary crown and what does it look like?

A temporary crown is a protective, cap-like dental restoration placed for a short period, typically from 2 to 8 weeks. A temporary crown is needed to protect the tooth or implant while the permanent crown is being fabricated.

  • It is not a therapeutic treatment, is worn for a short time, and does not replace permanent prosthodontics.
  • It protects the bite and gums until the permanent crown is placed.
  • It temporarily restores chewing function and the aesthetics of your smile.
  • It differs from a permanent crown by being made of a less durable material.
  • It requires greater caution and specialized oral hygiene.

A temporary—or as dentists professionally call it, a provisional—crown (essentially the same thing) usually looks just like a natural tooth. To ensure it looks visually appealing, the color and shape of the temporary crown are carefully matched to your teeth. This also helps maintain the height of the entire dentition, thereby preserving the patient’s correct bite.

A temporary crown is placed when:

  • The tooth has already been prepped (shaped) for the future permanent crown.
  • All root canals and the tooth itself have been treated.
  • The placed implant, if any, has already successfully integrated.

The cost of temporary crowns depends on both the total number needed and the material used. However, the price of temporary crowns is naturally much lower than that of permanent ones. On average, temporary crowns in Kyiv cost between 1,500 and 2,500 UAH.

What is the difference between a temporary crown and a permanent one?

The primary difference between a temporary crown and a permanent one is its intended duration of use. While a temporary crown similarly restores the bite shape and protects the underlying tooth, it is only meant for a short period. A permanent crown, on the other hand, is designed for long-term use spanning many years.

In general, a temporary crown also differs from a permanent one in the following ways:

  • Made of a different material – it is not as durable as a permanent crown.
  • Not designed for heavy chewing loads – for instance, temporary plastic crowns on front teeth can last quite well, but if placed on molars (chewing teeth), the patient will definitely face significant dietary restrictions.
  • Requires specialized hygiene – gentle yet regular brushing is essential.
  • Can sometimes be less comfortable – this is because it is secured with a special temporary cement so the doctor can easily remove it later. Permanent crowns typically offer a much tighter and snugger fit.
  • Cost variation – a temporary crown is always a more budget-friendly option compared to the permanent alternative.

    Materials for making temporary crowns

The most common materials used for fabricating temporary crowns are composite and plastic (acrylic). They are lightweight yet highly aesthetic. The fabrication stages for plastic and composite crowns differ significantly. A plastic tooth crown is usually made directly in the dentist’s chair; it is easily shaped right on the tooth and hardens quite quickly. A composite crown, however, is more often fabricated in a specialized dental laboratory, as it requires highly precise modeling and curing (polymerization) to ensure an ideal shape and superior strength.

Consequently, compared to a plastic one, a composite temporary crown is more durable, looks more aesthetic, and has a more natural appearance. A plastic crown can wear down slightly or fracture faster under chewing loads. However, both options are considered safe for the mucous membrane today, which is why temporary metal crowns are practically no longer used.

Advantages and disadvantages of plastic crowns

The main advantage of a temporary crown is the protection of the prepped (shaped) tooth and gums until the permanent crown is placed. In addition, there are benefits such as:
    • Maintenance of chewing function and a correct bite.
    • Preservation of the smile’s aesthetics.
    • Minimization of any damage to the prepped tooth or dental implant.
    • Quick placement (in most cases, it is made directly in the dentist’s chair).
    • Affordable price.
    • Fast and easy repair if needed.

However, temporary tooth crowns can also have some disadvantages:

    • Lower durability—sometimes they cannot withstand heavy chewing loads.
    • Susceptibility to cracks and chips.
    • Risk of premature debonding (coming loose).
    • Potential to cause higher sensitivity in teeth and gums.
    • Greater tendency to stain from food or drinks compared to permanent crowns.

How long does a temporary crown last?

On average, a temporary crown stays in place until the permanent one is installed. This period ranges from a few weeks to several months. How long you can wear a temporary crown depends heavily on your oral hygiene and diet.

Dentists provide the following recommendations regarding hygiene and lifestyle while wearing a temporary crown:

    • Limit your intake of very hard, hot, and sticky foods.
    • Limit carbonated beverages.
    • Brush your teeth gently, without applying heavy pressure, and preferably using only a soft toothbrush.
    • Use dental floss and, if necessary, an oral irrigator—but do so with caution.
    • Contact your dentist immediately if you notice any mobility or discomfort related to the crown.

If you follow all of your doctor’s recommendations, a temporary crown can safely last longer if necessary.
