Sialadenitis is an inflammation of a salivary gland that can be caused by infection, duct blockage, or other causes.

What are the main causes of sialoadenitis?

Sialadenitis usually occurs due to infections (bacterial or viral), blockage of the salivary gland duct by a stone or mucous plug, trauma to the gland, decreased salivation, or chronic diseases that weaken the immune system.

What symptoms indicate sialoadenitis?

The main symptoms of sialadenitis are pain and swelling in the area of the salivary gland, redness of the skin, fever, an unpleasant taste in the mouth or discharge of pus from the gland duct, and sometimes a general deterioration in well-being.

Causes of sialoadenitis

Sialadenitis can be caused by dehydration, certain medications (diuretics, antihistamines, and beta-blockers), viral infections (e.g., mumps), bacterial infections, or autoimmune diseases such as Sjögren’s syndrome.Bacterial infections frequently occur due to the blockage of salivary flow caused by stones in the duct or its narrowing. Anyone can develop sialadenitis. However, it is most common in adults over 50 years of age, especially in the presence of salivary gland stones. The risk of developing sialadenitis also exists in other age groups:

Infants in the first weeks of life
People who are ill or recovering from surgery
Individuals with dehydration, malnutrition, or immunodeficiency (when the body cannot fight off disease)

Symptoms

The symptoms of sialadenitis depend on the complexity of the specific case and can appear together or separately:

A persistent feeling of dry mouth
Pain, discoloration, and changes in the size of the glands
Fever, which may arise as a result of the infection
Decreased salivation (occurs in both chronic and acute forms of sialadenitis)
Painful sensations while eating
Swelling of the cheeks or neck

Treatment of sialoadenitis

There are several ways to treat sialadenitis, including:

Antibiotics — usually applied during the first stage of sialadenitis treatment;

Several factors, either independently or in combination, frequently trigger acute, chronic, or acute recurrent sialadenitis.
