What can you see on dental x-rays?

On the image you can see cavities, inflammation around the root, bone tissue condition, fillings, tooth roots and canals, as well as wisdom teeth position or implants.

What's better: x-ray or dental CT?

X-rays show individual teeth and their roots, suitable for detecting cavities or inflammation. CT (computed tomography) provides a three-dimensional image, shows bone tissue in detail, tooth position, nerves, and is used before implantation or complex treatment.

The Essence of Dental X-Ray Diagnostics

Visual examination alone is not sufficient to determine the correct diagnosis.

The main purpose of such diagnostics is to choose the right treatment method for the tooth. A jaw x-ray provides the doctor with information about the root and nerve condition of the molar, and helps identify any pathologies. The examination is performed using special compact equipment. Unlike a regular photograph, an x-ray image resulting from radiation shows the condition of dentin and gums, jawbone. Imaging of the maxillofacial area is necessary for the doctor in many cases. X-rays, digital radiography, or tomography are prescribed if the patient exhibits the following clinical manifestations:

Mechanical trauma, fractures of teeth, crowns, roots, jaw
Periodontitis, advanced periodontal disease
Cavities, including in remote areas or under crowns
Cysts, granulomas, and other types of growths
Various inflammatory processes in the oral cavity
Pathological changes
Eruption period
Malocclusion

X-ray imaging will be needed by the specialist before performing such dental procedures as prosthetics, implantation, bone grafting. Diagnostics are also performed to monitor treatment results.

Types of Dental Diagnostics

At “Med-Deo,” modern methods of dental diagnostics and treatment are used. The x-ray examination method is prescribed depending on indications.

The following types of examinations are used:

Periapical diagnostics. Advantages of this method: simultaneous coverage of 1-3 teeth and the ability to assess the condition of dental tissues and gums.
Bitewing x-ray. Thanks to this type of examination, it’s possible to detect cavities and tartar in remote, hidden areas.
Panoramic dental x-ray. This research method is used before orthodontic procedures. A panoramic image allows examination of the upper and lower jaw condition, as well as the nasal sinus.
Digital x-ray. A digital sensor provides the opportunity to significantly improve the quality of the dentist’s work. Digital equipment works in a highly focused manner. The rays do not scatter and have no effect on other parts of the body.
Dental CBCT – high-precision diagnostics using a tomograph.

3D diagnostics, digital radiography, and other types of examinations mentioned above at “Med-Deo” are safe and painless. The radiation dose is minimal, so x-rays are permitted even for children and pregnant women.

Dental Computed Tomography (CT). A modern diagnostic method – jaw computed tomography, allows identification of various pathologies at early stages. 2D and 3D diagnostics make it possible to accurately determine the structural features of jaws and dentition, individual areas, and maxillary sinuses. To obtain a CT scan, “Med-Deo” uses the latest computer tomograph.

Panoramic Dental X-Ray. An orthopantomogram is used by various specialists in dentistry. A panoramic x-ray is recommended before prosthetics, implantation, periodontal disease treatment and orthodontic procedures, with pathological changes in bone tissue, molar structure, and maxillary sinus. A “dental passport” allows the most accurate examination of the condition of incisors, molars, premolars, and canines.

Periapical X-Ray. This type of x-ray image can be obtained using special equipment. Among the advantages of periapical x-rays are high accuracy and speed of the procedure. At the same time, “Med-Deo” patients receive a micro-dose of radiation that does not affect health in any way. Thanks to x-rays, it’s possible to measure root canal length and select the most effective way to resolve the problem.

TMJ CT. Dental computed tomography is one of the newest and most effective types of radiological examination. Diagnostics of temporomandibular joint lesions provides the opportunity to obtain a 2D or 3D image of the necessary area. The radiation dose is negligible. TMJ diagnostics are indicated in the following cases: suspected malignant formations in this area; previous trauma requiring study of its consequences; upcoming implantation; temporomandibular joint dysfunction (head displacement); changes in bone structure. Dental and TMJ CT scans stand out favorably among other types of diagnostics. Thanks to the tomograph, it’s possible to examine adjacent tissues and detailed visualization of the necessary area in different projections. This enables the dentist to make an accurate diagnosis and prescribe proper treatment.
