gum hyperplasia, which results in excessive coverage of the teeth;
structural abnormalities of the facial skeleton;

How Is Gummy Smile Correction Performed?

There are several effective methods for correcting this condition that help reduce gum visibility when smiling and create a more aesthetically pleasing result. The choice of correction method is entirely determined by the underlying cause and the severity of the gummy smile.

Frenectomy (lip tie release). This is a surgical procedure that involves cutting or lengthening the frenulum of the upper lip — the tissue that connects it to the gums. As a result, the upper lip drops lower and covers the gums more effectively.
Braces. This is an orthodontic approach that involves wearing specialized appliances on the teeth to correct the bite and tooth alignment. Braces can significantly improve a gummy smile, particularly in cases involving jaw or skeletal abnormalities or misaligned teeth.
