Frequently Asked Questions

What is scaling?

Scaling is professional dental cleaning that removes plaque and tartar from the teeth. It is performed using a range of dental techniques — mechanical cleaning, ultrasonic methods, and sometimes laser treatment.

Why is scaling necessary?

Scaling helps prevent tooth decay, periodontitis, and other similar conditions — in short, it is essential for maintaining the health of your teeth and gums. It also noticeably brightens the shade of your teeth after cleaning.

What types of scaling are available?

The main types of scaling are mechanical (manual cleaning and tartar removal), ultrasonic, laser, and combined (using several techniques together). The most widely used today are ultrasonic and combined scaling.

How often should scaling be done?

Scaling is generally recommended once every six months to a year. However, the ideal frequency depends on individual factors — lifestyle, how quickly tartar builds up on the teeth, and so on.

What Is Scaling?

Scaling is a professional dental cleaning procedure designed to remove plaque and tartar from the surfaces of the teeth and from beneath the gumline. It is a deep periodontal clean carried out by a dentist — not something you can replicate at home — and is essential for preventing dental and gum problems.

  • It is simply incomparable to regular brushing at home
  • The process itself is pain-free and safe
  • The primary goal is healthy teeth and gums
  • It is not whitening, but it does make the teeth noticeably brighter
  • It is especially important — and in many cases mandatory — before getting braces, dental prosthetics, or implants

Scaling is a world apart from ordinary tooth brushing. It is a genuinely professional and necessary procedure, because tartar builds up on everyone’s teeth over time, no matter what — from food, from smoking, from generally imperfect hygiene. This kind of deep cleaning does far more than just lift the soft surface film off the teeth. It removes hardened deposits that no ordinary toothbrush can budge. The entire cleaning session takes somewhere between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the amount of build-up, the condition of the gums, and the specific type of scaling chosen.

The scaling procedure is carried out carefully and professionally, following these steps:

  • The dentist begins with a full examination of the oral cavity
  • The condition of the teeth and gums is assessed, along with the overall scope of work required
  • The dentist then proceeds with the scaling itself
  • This is followed by polishing of the tooth enamel — an important step that slows the future accumulation of new deposits
  • If necessary, the dentist may also recommend fluoride treatment — for instance, if the enamel appears brittle or cracked, or if there are early indicators of future decay

Problems That Scaling Addresses

The main issues scaling tackles are the removal of plaque and tartar. But beyond that, professional cleaning also resolves the knock-on problems that plaque and tartar cause in the first place. These include:

  • Gum inflammation, swelling, and bleeding
  • Bad breath
  • Tongue coating
  • Increased tooth sensitivity
  • A higher risk of tooth decay
  • In advanced cases — potentially even complete tooth loss

What’s more, scaling makes home oral hygiene significantly easier. Once tartar and hardened plaque have been removed, toothbrush bristles and dental floss can penetrate the spaces between teeth far more effectively — meaning all the teeth get cleaned much more thoroughly. And after scaling, your smile genuinely looks cleaner, brighter, and healthier.

Beyond preventing a whole range of dental diseases, improving at-home hygiene, and restoring gum health, scaling also plays a vital preparatory role before certain dental procedures. These include any form of orthodontic treatment — such as fitting braces or clear aligners — various types of prosthetics, veneers, and more. Simply put, veneers, aligners, and prosthetics bond and seat far better on a clean, smooth tooth surface, and they last considerably longer as a result, since there is no underlying tartar or plaque to trigger inflammation beneath them.

Types of Scaling

The main types of scaling are as follows:

Ultrasonic scaling is one of the most widely used professional cleaning methods, in which tartar is removed using a specialist ultrasonic tip. It works through high-frequency vibrations, but the process is fast and completely painless. A continuous water flow keeps the teeth cool during cleaning, so there is no discomfort whatsoever.

Mechanical scaling is the method that almost always accompanies other types of scaling. There are areas in the mouth that can only be reached manually — with hand instruments — and this approach allows the dentist to work through every last detail with complete thoroughness. It may take a little longer, but it ensures that every hard-to-reach zone is fully cleaned. The instruments used are extremely fine-tipped medical tools designed specifically for this purpose.

Laser scaling is a method for professionally removing tartar and plaque that is used less frequently but is equally effective and pain-free. It is performed using a specialised dental laser. As an added benefit, this method also sanitises the tooth surfaces and helps reduce gum bleeding.

Combined scaling is another widely used approach, as it brings together the manual method with one or more of the other techniques — typically ultrasonic. This combination delivers the most thorough and comprehensive clean across all areas of the dental arch.

GOOD TO KNOW: There is also a specific procedure known as gum scaling [subgingival scaling]. To be precise, this is slightly different from standard tooth scaling. Gum scaling involves the removal of bacterial deposits directly from beneath the gumline — that is, from within the periodontal pockets. It is not always performed at the same time as regular scaling, because subgingival scaling is specifically indicated when there is gum inflammation or a significant accumulation of bacteria beneath the gumline.

Indications and Contraindications for Scaling

Dental and gum scaling is indicated for the prevention of oral disease and for improving both hygiene and the aesthetic appearance of the smile. The primary indications are:

  • Dental plaque (soft deposits)
  • Tartar (hardened plaque)
  • Gum inflammation or bleeding (periodontitis, gingivitis, etc.)
  • Bad breath
  • Increased tooth sensitivity
  • Heavy smoking or frequent coffee consumption (both are notorious for accelerating tartar build-up)
  • Preparatory measures before prosthetics or orthodontic treatment

Contraindications — situations in which scaling is not recommended:

  • Serious cardiovascular conditions
  • Stomatitis, oral herpes, or other acute infections
  • Pregnancy — specifically the first trimester
  • Severely compromised immune system (for example, in oncology patients)
  • A cardiac pacemaker — though this applies primarily to ultrasonic scaling; mechanical scaling can still be performed

Before carrying out any scaling procedure, the dentist always carefully reviews the patient’s medical history for any contraindications, ensuring that everything is done professionally and safely.
