Clasp dentures: what you need to know about them

“Bugel” means “arch.” Clasp (bugel) dentures are structures consisting of a durable metal frame, an artificial plastic gum, and artificial teeth fixed onto it. Retention in the oral cavity is achieved through a special attachment system. If you need to quickly normalize chewing function after partial tooth loss, and installing a bridge or an implant is not possible at the moment, clasp dentures are the best option to correct the situation, even with the loss of incisors and molars.

Design features of clasp dentures: The arch structure attaches to the anchor teeth and is held in place by a cast-metal arch. Thanks to this, the load is evenly and equally distributed across the entire jaw. For the upper jaw, an arch that crosses the palate is individually designed. This minimizes discomfort and salivation while preserving all taste sensations. For the lower jaw, the structural arch is placed on the inner side. The central part is made thicker but narrower. This ensures the denture does not interfere with the lingual frenulum and maintains its strength. The possibility of getting prosthetics is decided on an individual basis. Indications and contraindications for the installation of clasp dentures

Contraindications to the placement of a clasp structure can be permanent or temporary. Prosthodontists classify the following as absolute contraindications:

complete edentulism;
allergy to the materials used;
oncological diseases;

pathologies that make it impossible to secure the denture;
mental illnesses;
exposed tooth roots.

It is also advisable to refrain from the procedure in cases of severe diabetes, chronic respiratory diseases, and acute-stage cardiac diseases. the cost of the structure is higher than that of other removable dentures;
a lengthy adaptation period.

splinting (splint-retained) – used for prosthetics in patients whose teeth are severely loose due to periodontal disease.

The choice of denture depends on the condition of the remaining teeth, the presence of dental issues in the oral cavity, and the patient's financial capabilities.

Prostheses on clips

The fastening is carried out using small locks consisting of two parts. no effect on articulation;

The only conditional disadvantage is that the prosthesis on attachments is expensive. But its price is fully justified, considering the advantages.

Arch dentures with telescopic crowns

Telescopic crowns are composite hollow artificial teeth that will replace missing abutments. The model is recommended for an insufficient number of teeth. Among the advantages:

excellent fixation;
the ability to combine with dental treatment;
strengthening of a loose row of teeth;
comfort during eating and communication;
compactness;
ease of use;
the possibility of modification.

The disadvantages include the cost of the design and the need to grind the teeth for the crowns.

Manufacturing and installation process

Prosthetics is performed in several stages:

Diagnosis. A visual inspection and evaluation of the tooth condition are conducted, followed by X-ray examinations, and the bite is measured in three planes. Next, the dentist determines the appropriate type of denture for the patient and identifies which teeth will serve as anchors.
Preparation. If a micro-lock structure is selected, the anchor teeth are ground down to fit under crowns.
Jaw Impression. The replica is used to create a plaster model, which is then used to manufacture the denture.
Casting and Polishing. The frame of the future structure is cast and polished.

Fitting. At this stage, the patient’s feedback and sensations are noted, and adjustments are made if necessary.
Manufacturing. The denture is fabricated, followed by a final fitting.
Long-term Placement. The structure is installed for long-term use.
