A 3D image of the teeth and jaw structure will allow the specialist to obtain detailed information about the oral cavity and oral organs.

X-rays play a crucial role in accurate diagnosis in dentistry. The simplest option is a targeted X-ray of a single tooth, which provides the least amount of information about the patient’s condition. A panoramic X-ray of the dental arches is more informative. However, both options provide a flat, two-dimensional image. In contrast, a CT scan of the jaw provides dentists with a three-dimensional image of all the teeth (a 3D model). In many cases, this is the only way to diagnose a problem.

Frequently Asked Questions on the topic:

What is a dental CT scan?

Computed tomography (CT) of the teeth is a highly accurate three-dimensional X-ray examination that shows the teeth, jaws, and surrounding tissues from all angles. It is used for detailed diagnosis, implant planning, complex root canal cases, and assessment of jaw anatomy.

Why is a dental CT scan important?

A dental CT scan is important for accurate treatment planning, especially when placing implants, treating complex root canals, or assessing the condition of the jaw following trauma. It provides a three-dimensional view of all structures, helps identify hidden abnormalities, and reduces the risk of complications during procedures.

What are the indications for a dental CT scan?

Dental CT scans are performed when planning implants, during complex root canal treatment, in cases of suspected cysts or neoplasms or jaw injuries, to assess the condition of wisdom teeth, and when preparing for orthodontic treatment.

What does a dental CT scan show?

A dental CT scan provides a detailed view of the condition of the teeth, root canals, jawbone, surrounding tissues, and joints.

How much does a dental CT scan cost?

The cost of a dental CT scan in Ukraine ranges from 300 to 1,500 UAH, depending on the scope of the examination (a specific segment, one jaw, or both jaws) and the specific clinic in your city.

What should you avoid doing before a dental CT scan?

Before a dental CT scan, you should not wear metal jewelry on your head or neck, removable dentures, or braces (unless required for the procedure), and you should inform the doctor if you are pregnant or have medical implants.

Which is better for the jaw: a CT scan or an X-ray?

An X-ray image is necessary to analyze hidden caries and cavities, but it does not always suffice, as it is a two-dimensional projection. Computed tomography of the jaw provides the most comprehensive information, as the X-ray imaging is combined with a system capable of processing and analyzing the resulting image.

What are the risks of a jaw CT scan?

As previously mentioned, a CT scan of the upper and lower jaws does not expose the body to excessive radiation, although it cannot be considered entirely risk-free. Computed tomography should be performed only when necessary and based on clinical indications. During pregnancy, a jaw CT scan should be prescribed only in complex cases and no earlier than the second trimester; the fetal area must be covered with a special protective apron.

What does a CT scan of the upper and lower jaws and the maxillary sinuses show?

The nasal passages form distinctive protrusions known as recesses, which serve as the precursors to the paranasal sinuses. These anatomical structures are closely associated with the jaw; therefore, a CT scan of the upper and lower jaws and the maxillary sinus recesses is prescribed to obtain a comprehensive picture of any pathological processes in this area. Additionally, a CT scan of the upper jaw and maxillary sinuses is advisable when treatment of the upper molars is required, as an infection in the tissues surrounding the tooth roots (periodontitis) can sometimes trigger odontogenic (dental-origin) sinusitis.

In which cases is a CT scan of the skull necessary?

Computed tomography of the skull is indicated for injuries to the upper and lower jaws. This procedure is also prescribed in cases such as:

  • Assessment of vascular status.
  • Trauma to the facial region.
  • Olfactory or visual disturbances of unclear etiology.
  • Presence of a foreign body.
  • Presence of a tumor.
  • Localization and assessment of the trigeminal nerve.
  • Detection of latent and overt ENT conditions.
  • Monitoring the effectiveness of surgical or conservative therapy.

You can get a CT scan of the skull or jaw in Kyiv at many private and municipal clinics.

Computed Tomography: When It Is Performed

Jaw CT scans are a fairly common practice.

This procedure is also in high demand at our dental clinic. A volumetric 3D image is necessary for:

  • Detection of hidden damage, as well as trauma to teeth and jawbones;
  • Detection of developmental abnormalities and pathologies;
  • Monitoring of chronic infectious foci;
  • Assessment of problematic implantations and complex extractions;
  • Identification of unerupted teeth;
  • Preparation for implantation;
  • Endodontics.

What does dental computed tomography (CT) offer? X-rays play a crucial role in accurate dental diagnostics. However, standard X-ray images display data in only two planes, whereas dental and jaw CT scans—performed using specialized dental CT equipment—provide a comprehensive view of the entire oral cavity in the form of a 3D model. This makes it easier to diagnose inflammatory processes, tumors, and hidden cavities. A CT scan is an integral part of implant placement preparation and ensures thorough monitoring during and after the dental implantation procedure. Based on CT data, the dentist can make an accurate diagnosis more quickly and precisely, and develop an effective treatment plan.

icon

The scan data enable the creation of an accurate treatment plan, help prevent errors and complications, and facilitate faster positive outcomes. CT scanning enhances the effectiveness of treatment when addressing dental issues.

How is a dental and jaw CT scan better than an X-ray?

Dental computed tomography is a highly informative diagnostic method. Unlike X-rays, a CT scan provides a clear view of the condition of soft tissues, revealing inflammation and growths. Other advantages of this method include:

  • High accuracy of the obtained data, with the ability to determine bone tissue parameters down to a fraction of a millimeter;
  • Clear imaging that allows for the detection of structural features and anomalies;
  • The ability to assess the condition of the dentition much more accurately using 3D images.

Moreover, the resulting images can be conveniently saved on a computer and, if necessary, printed in the required number of copies.

How is a dental CT scan performed?

Computed tomography: how it is performed

Dental computed tomography (CT) is a non-invasive and completely painless procedure. While dental tomography can sometimes be performed with the patient seated, the scanner typically features a special table with a headrest. The table, with the patient lying down, moves toward the machine’s sensors; the device then begins scanning the head, emitting quiet clicking sounds. In just half a minute, the device captures approximately 600 images. Dental CT scanners also offer an orthopantomography function, providing a panoramic view of the oral cavity.

Naturally, the dental CT procedure involves a preparation phase. Proper preparation ensures the scan yields the most informative data and accurate results. However, beyond preparation, patients often have other questions about the procedure—such as how the scan is performed or how long it takes to receive the results. Let’s discuss these questions in more detail.

Dental CT scans are typically quick, comfortable, painless, and require no anesthesia. The patient is positioned either sitting or standing, depending on the specific scanner model. Although the patient needs to keep their head still during the procedure, the scanner is usually equipped with a special table and headrest to help maintain a steady position. The procedure concludes once the scanner has completed the necessary number of rotations around the head.

It is also worth noting that patients often ask whether the CT scan is performed with or without a contrast agent. Dental CT scans are usually performed without contrast, as the jaws and teeth are clearly visible on a non-contrast CT scan.

Preparation for a dental CT scan

Preparing for a dental CT scan is simple. It involves removing any metal objects from the head and neck area (such as earrings, necklaces, or glasses). You should also inform the dentist if you are pregnant. Fasting is not required for a dental CT scan.

How long does the procedure take?

It takes approximately 20–40 seconds. However, depending on certain factors, a dental CT scan can take up to 10 minutes. The duration of the procedure is influenced by the following factors:

  • the scope of the procedure (e.g., whether only one jaw segment or one or two teeth need to be examined, or if a full scan of both jaws is required);
  • the settings of the CT scanner itself;
  • the type of equipment;
  • and sometimes, patient movement (there are situations where the scan needs to be repeated because of this).

When to expect the result

The result of such a CT scan is a 3D cross-sectional image of the jaw, teeth, roots, and surrounding tissues. The time required to receive the results depends on the format and complexity of the scan (i.e., whether only the image itself is needed or a detailed report is also required). Typically, the finished result is available within 15 to 30 minutes. In rarer cases—such as when a highly detailed report is needed following a scan of the entire jaw and multiple teeth—it may take up to 24 hours to receive the results.

Benefits of getting a 3D dental scan at Med-Deo

The CT diagnostic process at Med-Deo is a simple procedure for obtaining reliable information. Compared to similar procedures performed on older scanners, modern devices significantly reduce radiation exposure. The examination takes just a few seconds, with the actual radiation exposure lasting only six seconds. A 3D image of the teeth and jaw system allows the specialist to obtain comprehensive, detailed information about the oral cavity and surrounding structures. While finding a place to get a 3D dental scan in Kyiv is easy, prices and service quality vary significantly across different dental centers.

At our clinic, computed tomography is available at a competitive price. If you need a dental CT scan in Kyiv, it is best to choose a clinic trusted and respected by both residents and visitors—such as the Med-Deo dental clinic. Our highly professional staff utilizes advanced medical equipment and high-quality materials to ensure accurate diagnoses and effective subsequent treatment.

We value every patient and offer services that are not only of the highest quality but also affordably priced.

Computed tomography of the upper and lower jaws: procedure

Computed tomography (CT) is performed using a specialized, modern device known as a CT scanner.

In essence, a CT scan combines two diagnostic procedures: X-ray imaging and computer processing. The X-ray component captures the images, while the computer processes them. For accurate diagnosis and dental treatment planning, we can obtain a 3D CT scan of the jaw—a volumetric, three-dimensional image that allows us to view the area from various angles and provides comprehensive information about the bone, soft tissues, teeth, and roots.

Since CT technology is fundamentally based on X-rays, the image acquisition method is the same. Bones, for instance, absorb more X-ray radiation, so they appear as white structures on the images. Soft tissues, conversely, appear black because their lower density allows the rays to pass through unimpeded. After the patient is positioned within the CT scanner’s gantry, the doctor takes a preliminary overview image, known as a topogram. They then mark the areas of interest, and the scanning process begins.

Invisible rays penetrate the target areas; the computer processes the data, compiles it into a volumetric model, and generates a multitude of images. A jaw CT scan is highly valuable across virtually all fields of dentistry—including orthodontics, restorative dentistry, prosthodontics, oral surgery, and implantology—helping to address specific issues. For example:

  1. In orthodontics, children are prescribed jaw CT scans to visualize developing tooth buds and their growth angles. Additionally, when correcting a bite, CT imaging of the jaw joints is crucial for thoroughly assessing their condition and performing precise calculations.
  2. In restorative and endodontic treatment, CT scans of the upper and lower jaws allow for the visualization of distances to nerves, the number of root canals, bone tissue structure, and pathological changes near the tooth, as well as an assessment of the quality of previous root canal fillings and dental treatments.
  3. In oral surgery, a jaw CT scan is necessary when a cyst is suspected. A cyst is a benign growth that frequently develops near tooth roots, in the gums, or within the bone tissue.

  1. Before starting orthopedic treatment, the doctor will invariably order a CT scan of the upper or lower jaw. This enables the correct selection of the prosthetic design and ensures the even distribution of chewing forces across the supporting implants or teeth.
  2. Performing a CT scan of the jawbone is crucial for planning implant treatment, as it significantly facilitates the selection of the appropriate implant length, shape, and quantity.

Patients sometimes hold the misconception that CT scanners expose them to excessive radiation; in reality, the doses delivered by modern machines are minimal. Understanding the procedure for a jaw CT scan can also help alleviate any anxiety. To minimize radiation exposure, patients are almost always asked to wear a protective apron, and the scan itself is very quick—taking about the same amount of time as a standard X-ray.
