Removable dentures: what are they?

Removable dentures are orthopedic structures that can be independently removed and secured in the oral cavity.

They effectively restore the function of the chewing apparatus and the aesthetics of the dentition. Durable, hypoallergenic materials, along with new technologies and equipment, are used for manufacturing these dentures. Typically, the structures are secured using attachments and clasps—special hooks made of high-elasticity precious metals or stainless steel alloy. Full dentures are fixed in place due to the suction effect.

Advantages of Removable Prosthetics

In modern dentistry, the placement of dental prostheses is one of the most in-demand services. Removable prosthetics occupy a special place here.

Such models:

effectively replace defects in the dentition;
quickly restore chewing functions;
bring back an attractive look to the smile;
are easy to remove and clean.

If a denture rubs or begins to irritate the surrounding tissues, a dentist can adjust these areas. Furthermore, the structures can be replaced. You can install a temporary denture from the affordable options available, and later switch to a more advanced one. Removable dentures are affordable. However, the larger the defect, the higher the cost.

Modern new-generation dental prostheses are functional, comfortable, inexpensive, and look nothing like the bulky, unpleasant-looking 'grandma's' false teeth in a glass.

Types of removable dentures

Types of dental structures

Removable dental structures are distinguished by the materials of manufacture, and they are also divided into full and partial. Depending on the condition of the oral cavity and general health, as well as taking into account the wishes and budget of the patient, we offer the most suitable variant of a removable prosthesis. At the initial consultation, our dentist will tell you in detail about the features of each of them and about the process itself. Regardless of the chosen model, in the Med-Deo clinic all procedures are carried out using modern equipment and high-quality materials.

Plastic prostheses

Plastic – made of dental plastics and can be full or partial. The basis of the removable structure is made in natural shades, corresponding to the natural color of the patient’s gums. Complete dentures are fixed with a locking valve. A “suction cup” effect should occur. Partial removable dental prostheses are fixed with clasps, a kind of hooks that cover the preserved supporting teeth. The disadvantages of prosthetics with plastic structures include large size, a long period of getting used to, weak fixation on the jaw, as well as the visibility of clasps located on the front teeth (in the smile area). The basis of the plastic structure affects the taste receptors, which leads to deterioration of speech, changes in taste sensations when eating, until the patient adapts to wearing the prosthesis.

Nylon removable dentures

Nylon – a hypoallergenic type, used mainly in single and partial absence of teeth. Compared to plastic, nylon prosthetics look more aesthetically pleasing. Clasps have a pink tint, and therefore are invisible in the smile area. A soft, flexible prosthesis, made of thin elastic material, is so comfortable to wear that this type is used even when prosthetics are necessary for periodontitis. The disadvantages of such prosthetics include painful sensations that accompany chewing food during the process of getting used to it, the need to make adjustments, and rapid subsidence.

Acrylic dentures

Removable acrylic dentures have a minimum number of contraindications for installation. This is an aesthetic lightweight design that is used to make both full and partial models. Including single “butterfly” models. The affordable price and inexpensive repair make acrylic dentures popular. They are easy to use and hygienic. The disadvantages include a long adaptation period and insufficient fixation of the models on the suction cups, which can be improved by using special dental pastes and gels. The service life is about 5 years.

Buckle structures

Clasp dentures – consist of a metal frame. It has a nylon base or pink plastic with attached artificial teeth. Such removable dental prostheses are used when teeth are partially missing. They differ from other methods in that they have a thin metal frame without a roof, do not cover the receptors on it and do not take up space under the tongue. The design can be fixed in two ways – with the help of clasps and micro-locks (attachments). Clasp dentures perform the chewing function better than plastic and nylon ones. In addition, their service life exceeds 5 years. The disadvantages of the model are quite relative. Reviews about them are purely positive, and the high cost is justified by the quality and durability of the dentures, and the long service life of the removable structure.

Removable prosthetics in the absence of teeth

For Complete Tooth Loss

Total edentulism (one hundred percent absence of one’s own teeth) is “corrected” by placing full dentures. In this case, the chewing load is transferred directly to the gums and bone tissues of the lower (or upper) jaw. This can result in their atrophy and a reduction in volume. Therefore, every 3 years, a patient with a full removable denture has to replace the structure with a new one, in accordance with the changes in the bone tissues. However, this can be avoided by installing dental prostheses on implants. Difficult fixation is also considered a downside. Discomfort during eating and speech impairment usually disappear after 2–3 weeks of intensive (daily) use.

For Partial Tooth Loss

Partial dentures are fitted for patients who still have several or at least one of their own teeth. These teeth serve as an anchor, allowing for the distribution of the chewing load. The design allows for the replacement of even a single tooth, which is very convenient for those who, due to various circumstances, cannot undergo implantation. This can also benefit patients who do not want to grind down healthy teeth to install a bridge. Another advantage of partial prosthetics is less wear on the gums and the absence of painful sensations during chewing. Manufacturing and installation of removable dentures

The placement of removable dentures is less traumatic compared to fixed prosthetics and implantation.

The procedure is simple, causes no discomfort, and takes very little time. At the “Med-Deo” clinic in Kyiv, three main stages are identified:

Stage 1. Preparatory – the patient visits the dentist for an oral examination. Our dentist evaluates the overall state of health, the presence of one’s own teeth, the need for their treatment, identifies potential contraindications, and recommends the optimal type of dental prosthetics. If acute oral diseases, severe physical exhaustion, or blood disorders are diagnosed, the placement will have to be postponed. The same applies to the pregnancy period.
Stage 2. If there are no contraindications, our dentist takes an impression of the oral cavity. It is necessary for manufacturing a denture that will perfectly match the anatomical features of the specific patient. Based on this impression, technicians in the dental laboratory will create a highly precise replica of the dentition.
Stage 3. The third stage consists of two parts. First, right before placing the denture, oral sanitization is performed, and the anchor teeth are prepared. Then, the patient tries on the finished dental prosthesis to ensure the structure fits perfectly and does not cause discomfort. Otherwise, the denture will need to be adjusted. Moving forward, patients are recommended to visit the dentist on a regular basis for denture cleaning and oral health monitoring, as well as to follow instructions for denture care.

How to get used to a removable denture

Not everyone manages to get used to the presence of a foreign body in the mouth right away. Most often, during the adaptation period, patients complain of uncomfortable sensations: the tongue feels crowded, chewing feels different from usual, and speech is not always clear. Immediately after the placement, excessive salivation or a gag reflex may occur. The extent of the discomfort depends on how bulky the denture is. On average, patients get used to dental prostheses within three weeks. Adaptation is easier when rinsing the mouth with warm water. The gag reflex can be suppressed with the help of lozenges. Constant practice will help avoid speech impairments. To reduce denture shifting, food should be chewed on both sides. The diet should include sliced fruits—this way, chewing with new teeth will quickly become natural. Adaptation can be accelerated by keeping the denture in the mouth overnight during the initial period.
