Dentists may also use the terms “generalised” and “localised” gum recession. Generalised recession refers to the involvement of multiple teeth across an arch, while localised recession describes a reduction confined to a single site.

There is also the Miller Classification system, under which specialists divide the condition into the following stages:

Class I — recession confined to the free gingival margin [the unattached portion of the gum]
Class II — recession affecting the attached gingival tissue [the portion anchored to the underlying bone]
Class III — visible loss of both soft tissue and bone in the interdental spaces between teeth
Class IV — tissue reduction between the teeth
