On any chewing surface of a tooth there are smooth tubercles, small depressions between which are called fissures.

Often, due to the irregular shape or excessive depth of the grooves, food residues accumulate in them. Accordingly, the accumulation of food in the fissures leads to the formation of harmful microorganisms. The procedure of fissure sealing is aimed at eliminating this problem. At the same time, such a manipulation in modern dentistry also allows you to enrich the teeth with fluoride.

Why choose Med-Deo clinic for fissure sealing?

Fissures are natural grooves on the tooth surface. When they are too deep, food particles constantly get trapped in them, leading to the development of caries. Fissure sealing at MED-DEO clinics is a modern preventive procedure that reliably seals these grooves with a special material, creating a smooth, protective barrier.

Who is it for and why is it necessary?

The procedure is especially relevant for children after the eruption of their first molars, as their enamel is still soft and vulnerable. However, it is also successfully applied to adults. Sealing not only prevents the accumulation of bacteria but also strengthens the enamel through the use of fluoride-containing materials.

How is the procedure performed at MED-DEO?

An experienced dentist first conducts an examination to determine the need for the procedure. Then, the tooth is thoroughly cleaned, the enamel is prepared, and a flowable sealant is applied, perfectly filling all the grooves. The material is hardened with a special lamp, creating a strong and smooth coating that protects the tooth for up to two years.

The main advantage of MED-DEO is the combination of expert doctors, high-quality materials, and affordable prices. The clinic’s specialists emphasize: investing in prevention is much simpler and cheaper than treating caries later. Book a consultation to ensure your child has a healthy smile!

Characteristics of Fissure Caries

Fissure caries affects the areas of the fissures and manifests as a spot.

It is one of the most common types of carious lesions. Furthermore, the disease can occur immediately after the eruption of the first primary teeth. Most often, fissure caries is caused by the anatomical features of the teeth, with lesions appearing on immature tooth enamel. There are several stages of fissure caries: enamel-primary and secondary fissure caries. At the “spot” stage, serious treatment is not required; sealing the fissures is sufficient. Timely check-ups with a dentist are key to detecting pathology at the initial stage of development and, consequently, ensuring successful treatment.

What is Fissure Sealing?

Fissure sealing is performed to prevent the development of caries. Sealing these natural grooves prevents the accumulation of bacteria in those areas. The procedure is especially relevant for children, as the mineralization of children’s teeth does not occur until at least two years after the eruption of permanent molars. Fissure sealing in children is recommended for the following purposes:

  • Prevention of primary or secondary caries;
  • Creation of a protective barrier on the tooth surface that prevents the accumulation of harmful microorganisms;
  • Improvement of tooth enamel resistance.

Thanks to sealing, it is possible to stop caries even at the 'white spot' stage.

When is Fissure Sealing Necessary?

After an oral examination, a dentist will recommend sealing the fissures in the following cases:

  • Excessive roughness of the tooth surface;
  • Excessively deep fissures, which lead to the constant accumulation of food debris;

  • Appearance of darkening or plaque in the fissure depressions;
  • First signs of fissure caries.

The first molars are the most vulnerable. To prevent the formation of carious lesions on them, sealing is recommended even without specific indications, as a preventive measure. Sealing is also performed on primary teeth—this procedure helps them last longer. Fissure sealing with a sealant is also used in adult dentistry. With age, enamel loses fluoride and calcium, which in turn leads to thinning. Sealing can protect teeth from the onset of caries.

Indications for the Procedure in Children

After a thorough examination, an experienced dentist may prescribe sealing for children as soon as the first six molars appear. Fissure sealing is recommended in the following cases:

  • Excessively deep physiological depressions;
  • Incomplete enamel mineralization in a tooth that has already fully erupted;
  • Early-stage fissure caries.

Contraindications

There are situations where sealing is strictly prohibited. A pediatric dentist will not prescribe the sealing of wide, healthy, and well-cleansed fissures. There is also no need for sealant application if a child’s teeth remain healthy for four years after eruption. In the presence of inflammatory diseases of the teeth or gums, appropriate treatment is performed first, followed by sealing.

Methods and stages of treatment

Fissure sealing methods

Modern dentistry offers several methods of sealing fissures: non-invasive, invasive, extended. Non-invasive sealing is used for teeth that have just erupted. Invasive is recommended when the first carious lesions appear. The extended sealing method is used if carious lesions are detected after grinding. First, treatment is prescribed, then sealing is performed. The type of technique is determined individually in each individual case after a thorough examination and diagnosis.

Invasive Method of Fissure Sealing

The essence of the invasive fissure sealing technique lies in widening the fissure cavity with a diamond bur and subsequent removal of the damaged layer. After that, sealing with a sealant is performed. Invasive sealing is used in cases of pigmentation or the first carious lesions on the grooves. The algorithm of the technique is as follows:

  • Thorough cleaning of teeth from plaque and food debris;
  • Anesthesia (rarely required);
  • Opening of the fissures using a dental drill, providing maximum access for inspection and detection of carious lesions;
  • Carrying out the procedure using the non-invasive method.

If caries is detected after opening the fissures, the sealing process is stopped. Sealing can only be performed after appropriate treatment is completed.

Non-invasive method of fissure sealing

This method of sealing with a sealing material is relevant for teeth that have recently erupted. The procedure is performed without anesthesia and without a drill, so it is absolutely painless. Non-invasive sealing is easily tolerated by patients of any age.

Stages procedures

Stages of the sealing procedure:

  • Thorough cleaning of the tooth surface using professional toothpaste;
  • Treatment of teeth with a special antiseptic preparation;
  • Isolation of teeth from saliva;
  • Treatment of the working area;
  • Drying;

  • Filling the fissures with a thin layer of sealing material;
  • Drying the composition under a special lamp;
  • Removing the remnants of the filling material by grinding.
  • At the final stage, the dentist treats the teeth with a fluoride varnish.

Materials Used for the Procedure

Today, a flowable material called sealant is used for fissure sealing. The main feature of a sealant is that it ensures high-quality sealing and excellent adhesion to the tooth surface. Pre-treatment of the working surface further enhances the adhesion level. Additional enamel strengthening is achieved through the use of composite fluoride-containing materials. A high-quality sealant will protect the tooth surface from harmful bacteria for up to two years.The experienced dentists at our clinic perform fissure sealing for both adults and children at the highest professional level. Preliminary diagnostics are conducted using the latest equipment. Do not delay your health—book an appointment today. At the “Med-Deo” clinic, highly qualified pediatric dentists are at your service. Our patients are pleasantly surprised by the affordable cost of services, as well as the high-class service and the quality of the procedures.

Prevention

Prevention of Fissure Caries

The methods for preventing fissure caries are similar to those for preventing any dental disease. To avoid carious lesions, the following is recommended:

  • Thorough oral hygiene: proper tooth brushing twice a day, using mouthwash and dental floss;
  • Tooth remineralization twice a year;
  • Sealing of problem areas;
  • Enamel fluoridation;

  • Professional cleaning at the dental office;
  • Maintaining proper levels of calcium and fluoride in the body;
  • A healthy diet including foods rich in essential vitamins, microelements, and minerals.

Preventing dental problems is easier, cheaper, and more painless than treating them. Be sure to regularly schedule appointments for your child and visit the dentist yourself at least twice a year!
