Why Patients Choose MED-DEO for Flipper Dentures

Losing a tooth is not only about appearance — it also affects everyday comfort, including chewing, speaking, and self-confidence. That is why replacing a missing tooth should not be delayed.

flipper denture is a lightweight removable prosthesis that attaches to neighboring teeth and quickly fills the gap in the dental arch. It is often chosen as a temporary solution after tooth extraction, before dental implantation, or whenever a patient wants to restore aesthetics quickly without complex treatment.

Flipper Denture Cost in 2026

The cost of a flipper denture is calculated individually and depends on several important factors, which is why the price may vary even within the same city.

The final price is influenced by:

  • Material — nylon dentures usually cost more than acrylic ones because they are more flexible and look more natural.
  • Number of missing teeth — a denture replacing two teeth is more expensive than one designed for a single tooth.
  • Design complexity — metal clasps or combined options with crowns increase the overall cost.
  • Clinic level and location — established clinics in central areas often charge more for their services.
  • Included services — consultation, diagnostics, X-rays, fitting, and adjustments may be included in the package or billed separately.
  • Production speed — express fabrication in 2–3 days usually comes with an additional fee.

To get an accurate price, it is best to schedule a dental examination and receive a personalized treatment plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a flipper denture be worn permanently?

A flipper denture is primarily intended as a temporary solution.

Can you sleep with a flipper denture?

In most cases, dentists recommend removing it at night to let the gums rest and to reduce stress on the supporting teeth.

How many supporting teeth are needed?

Usually, at least two healthy abutment teeth are needed — one on each side of the gap.

How long does it take to make one?

Standard fabrication time is typically 2 to 5 business days.

Will I feel it in my mouth?

Some mild discomfort is possible at first, but after a short adaptation period, most patients barely notice it.

Потрібно було тимчасово відновити відсутній зуб. Лікар запропонував протез метелик, який виявився дуже зручним рішенням. Виглядає акуратно і майже непомітний.

What Is a Flipper Denture in Dentistry?

flipper denture, also known as an immediate partial denture, is a removable micro-prosthesis used to replace one or two missing teeth. It is called “immediate” because it can often be fitted right after a tooth extraction or within a short period afterward.

The Ukrainian name “метелик” comes from the shape of the clasps. The thin side attachments wrap around the neighboring teeth and resemble butterfly wings. The denture itself consists of an artificial tooth mounted on a small base with retaining extensions. It is compact, lightweight, and barely noticeable in the mouth, which is why it is especially popular in the smile zone.

By purpose, a flipper denture may be:

  • Temporary — used during healing or while preparing for an implant
  • Long-term provisional — worn for a longer period when implantation or bridgework is not yet possible

Most often, a flipper denture is used to replace one tooth. Replacing two teeth is also possible, provided the adjacent teeth can offer enough support and stability.

Its main advantages over larger removable dentures are its compact size, simple fixation, and the absence of a bulky plate covering the palate or gums.

Types of Flipper Dentures by Material

Acrylic Flipper Denture

This is the most affordable option. It restores the shape of the missing tooth well, but it is less flexible and may feel somewhat firmer in the mouth. It is most often used as a temporary prosthesis.

Nylon Flipper Denture

A nylon flipper is more flexible, lightweight, and comfortable to wear. It adapts better to the gums, looks more natural, and is almost invisible. It is especially suitable for the smile zone and for longer-term wear.

Flipper Denture with Metal Clasps

This design includes additional metal retention elements, which improve stability. However, it may be less aesthetic if the metal attachments are visible when smiling.

When Is a Flipper Denture Recommended?

A flipper denture is a good option when a patient needs to replace a missing tooth quickly, comfortably, and without surgery. It is commonly recommended in the following cases:

  • One or two missing teeth in a row
It closes the gap without grinding down healthy neighboring teeth, preserving their natural structure.

  • Temporary replacement during implant treatment
It allows the patient to avoid having an empty space in the dental arch while waiting for the final implant crown.

  • Fast smile restoration after tooth extraction
This is especially important in the front teeth area. In many cases, the patient can leave the clinic with a restored smile on the same day.

  • Improved chewing function
The denture helps distribute chewing pressure more evenly, restores comfort while eating, and reduces overload on the remaining teeth.

  • Prevention of tooth shifting and bite problems
Timely replacement of a missing tooth helps maintain the correct position of adjacent teeth and lowers the risk of future orthodontic complications.

Contraindications for a Flipper Denture

Although a flipper denture is simple and convenient, it is not suitable for every patient. A dentist must evaluate the condition of the supporting teeth, gums, and bite before recommending this option.

Absolute Contraindications

A flipper denture may not be recommended in the following cases:

  • No supporting teeth on both sides of the gap
  • Severe mobility of the supporting teeth
  • Extensive decay of the teeth that would hold the prosthesis
  • Acute inflammation in the oral cavity
  • Allergy to denture materials, especially acrylic

Relative Contraindications

In some cases, a flipper denture is possible but may not be the best long-term choice:

  • Advanced bone loss
  • Need to replace more than two consecutive teeth
  • Bruxism or very heavy chewing load
  • Absence of the last tooth in the row, which makes retention more difficult

The final decision should always be made after a clinical examination.

Advantages of a Flipper Denture

A flipper denture is often chosen because it offers a practical and minimally invasive way to restore a missing tooth.

Main advantages include:

  • Fast fabrication and fitting
  • No need to grind down adjacent healthy teeth
  • Lower cost compared with implants or fixed prosthetics
  • Good aesthetics and a natural-looking smile
  • Comfortable wear thanks to its light weight and compact design
  • Versatility for both front and back teeth as a temporary solution

Limitations of a Flipper Denture

To set realistic expectations, it is important to understand that a flipper denture also has some disadvantages:

  • It is mainly intended for temporary use
  • Its fixation is less secure than that of implants or fixed crowns
  • It may break under excessive chewing pressure
  • It does not fully replace the function of a natural tooth root
  • It requires regular removal, cleaning, and follow-up checks

Which Teeth Can Be Replaced with a Flipper Denture?

A flipper denture is most often used to replace a single missing tooth, especially in the front or side areas. In the smile zone, it provides a strong cosmetic benefit. In the chewing area, it is usually considered a temporary option rather than a permanent one.

The stability of the denture depends greatly on the condition of the adjacent supporting teeth, so the dentist decides whether this solution is appropriate after examination and diagnostics.

Stages of Flipper Denture Placement

The process of getting a flipper denture is usually quick and painless. It generally includes the following steps:

  1. Consultation and diagnostics
The dentist examines the teeth, gums, and bite and determines whether a flipper denture is suitable.

  2. Preparation of the oral cavity
If necessary, cavities are treated, professional cleaning is performed, and the mouth is prepared for prosthetics.

  3. Impressions or 3D scanning
A precise model of the mouth is created for custom fabrication.

  4. Laboratory fabrication
The denture is produced based on the patient’s anatomy, bite, and tooth shade.

  5. Fitting and adjustment
The fit, comfort, retention, and appearance are checked.

  6. Delivery and care instructions
The finished prosthesis is placed, and the patient receives detailed guidance on hygiene and everyday use.

How to Care for a Flipper Denture

Proper care affects both the comfort and lifespan of the denture, as well as the health of the gums and remaining teeth.

Daily Cleaning

Recommended routine:

  • Remove the denture after meals
  • Rinse it under running water at room temperature
  • Clean it with a soft brush and a denture cleanser or mild soap
  • Pay close attention to the clasps and base where plaque and food particles collect
  • Rinse the mouth after removing and cleaning the denture

Storage

Correct storage is also important:

  • Keep the denture in a dedicated denture case
  • Nylon dentures are usually stored dry
  • Acrylic dentures may need to be stored in a special solution, depending on the dentist’s advice
  • Disinfecting tablets or approved antiseptic solutions may also be used

What to Avoid

Do not:

  • Use abrasive toothpaste
  • Clean it with a hard toothbrush
  • Expose it to hot water
  • Use harsh household chemicals
  • Leave an acrylic denture dry for too long, as it may crack or deform

Service Life of a Flipper Denture

The lifespan of a flipper denture depends on the material, chewing нагрузка, and how well the patient follows care instructions. It is important to understand that this is generally a temporary prosthetic solution.

Acrylic Flipper Denture

The average service life is about 3 to 12 months. With careful use, it may last up to 1.5 years.

Reasons for shorter durability include:

  • Wear of the clasps
  • Loss of flexibility
  • Minor deformation of the base
  • Reduced retention over time

Nylon Flipper Denture

A nylon denture is more flexible and durable. Its average service life is around 2 years under moderate chewing load.

In some cases — especially for front teeth, low chewing pressure, or older patients — it may serve for up to 4–5 years.

Its lifespan is limited mainly because of:

  • Gradual stretching of the nylon
  • Reduced elasticity of the clasps
  • Wear of the artificial tooth over time
