What is atheroma?

An atheroma is a cyst that forms from a sebaceous gland under the skin.
Typically, its size ranges from 2–3 mm to 3–4 cm. These growths can appear on any part of the body where hair follicles or sebaceous glands are present. The growth is painless and does not pose a threat to health. However, it causes significant aesthetic discomfort and is prone to injury. Quite often, an atheroma reaches a large size, causing discomfort, especially if it forms on exposed areas of the body, such as the head or neck. Therefore, in most cases, doctors recommend atheroma removal.

Symptoms of an Atheroma

Atheromas usually manifest as small, ball-shaped lumps under the skin. They can be soft and smooth to the touch or have a dense and firm structure. Atheromas do not cause painful sensations, but they can sometimes be tender to the touch or under pressure. In rare cases, the growth becomes inflamed, which can lead to redness, pain, swelling, and pus discharge. An atheroma grows rapidly, especially if subjected to trauma or pressure.

Methods of Atheroma Removal

There are several methods for removing an atheroma:

  1. Surgical method: A doctor makes a small incision in the skin and removes the cyst along with its surrounding capsule.
  2. Laser removal of growths: A safe and effective method where laser radiation targets the tumor. This method is highly precise, does not damage healthy tissue, and promotes rapid healing without leaving marks.
  3. Radiowave removal: A doctor uses high-frequency radiowaves to completely eliminate the growth. This method does not require a skin incision and can be effective for removing cysts of various sizes.

To prevent an atheroma from recurring after removal, it is necessary to maintain proper skin hygiene, avoid injuries, and undergo regular medical check-ups.

What is a boil, a carbuncle?

A furuncle is an acute, purulent-necrotic inflammation of a hair follicle and its associated sebaceous glands.

The condition occurs as a result of infection by bacterial microflora, most commonly Staphylococcus. The appearance of multiple furuncles on the skin at various stages of development is called furunculosis. A carbuncle, on the other hand, is a purulent-necrotic inflammation of the skin and subcutaneous tissue surrounding a cluster of hair follicles and sebaceous glands. If a furuncle appears on the face, severe complications can arise, such as purulent meningitis and sepsis.

Causes, Symptoms, and Removal Methods

Furuncles and carbuncles form when bacteria penetrate through cuts, minor wounds, and micro-cracks in the skin. Factors that contribute to the development of the purulent process include low immunity, excessive sweating, and others. A furuncle is characterized by the appearance of a painful follicular pustule on the skin, accompanied by red erythema and necrosis at the center (the boil core). After the necrotic tissue is sloughed off, healing occurs, leaving a scar.

Symptoms of a carbuncle manifest as follows:

  • The skin in the affected area appears inflamed and has a purple-blue tint.
  • The process is accompanied by suppuration (pus formation).
  • Subsequently, multiple funnel-shaped openings form, which later turn into a wound with a dirty-gray base and undermined edges.

A carbuncle causes general intoxication, a high fever, and, in severe cases, can induce vomiting and loss of consciousness.
Surgical removal of a furuncle is required in complicated cases, particularly during the transition to the necrotic stage or when a carbuncle forms.

The procedure for removing a furuncle or carbuncle is performed in several stages:

  1. Before starting the procedure, the doctor administers a local anesthetic to reduce pain and discomfort.
  2. Next, the purulent growth is incised and drained.
  3. If necessary, dead (necrotic) tissues are removed.
  1. The wound is flushed with an antiseptic solution to eliminate residual pus and prevent infection.
  2. The wound is covered with a sterile dressing.

The procedure takes 10 to 15 minutes and usually does not require hospitalization.

What is a fibroid and how to remove it?

A fibroma is a benign tumor composed of connective tissue.

It can occur in any part of the body, but it is most frequently found on the skin, in the mammary gland, or in the uterus. In most cases, fibromas are not dangerous. However, they may require surgical removal if they grow larger or cause discomfort.

A fibroma on the head and neck can be eliminated using several methods:

  1. Laser removal: The tumor is completely removed without damaging healthy tissue. Furthermore, laser removal of growths has virtually no contraindications, with the exceptions being oncology and pregnancy.
  2. Radiowave method: Radiowaves create a high-frequency electric field that penetrates the tissue and destroys the fibroma cells. Consequently, the procedure is entirely non-contact.
  3. Surgical removal: This is a traditional method used for large fibromas. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia; the doctor makes an incision in the skin and removes the tumor using surgical instruments. Finally, self-absorbable sutures are applied.
The “Med-Deo” clinic utilizes various methods for removing growths on the head and neck, depending on the size and characteristics of the tumor, as well as the individual characteristics of the patient.
