Fluoridation of teeth

Fluoridation of teeth in children and adults helps protect the dentition from the negative effects of an acidic environment. Due to the coating of units with a special solution containing fluoride ions, bacteria accumulate much less. Thus, the procedure allows you to slow down the process of caries development and keep your teeth intact and healthy.

Types of fluoridation in dentistry:

  • Simple. The technique of coating enamel with fluoride varnish.
  • Express. The technique involves applying fluoride gel to the enamel using pre-made jaw casts. The procedure is individual for each patient.
  • Complex deep fluoridation.

It is possible to use electrophoresis - a manipulation that has a cumulative effect, and/or home fluoridation using special gels and pastes with a high fluoride content.

What is deep dental fluoridation?

Deep dental fluoridation is a dental procedure to strengthen tooth enamel. Thanks to this, it improves enamel resistance to acids, reduces sensitivity, and protects against decay and cavities. This procedure takes place with the help of special preparations that contain fluorine. But it is important that it does not cure caries itself. Fluoridation is effective precisely as a caries prevention.

Fluoridation is painless and is applied to the surface of the teeth in the form of fluoride-containing products. It is recommended for both adults and children. And among the signs that say that fluoridation should be done without fail, white spots on the teeth, fragile enamel (often chipped) and noticeably increased sensitivity.

Directly deep fluoridation involves not only the surface layer, unlike the usual one. Deep fluoridation definitely penetrates deeper into the microcracks and fills them with fluorine and calcium. Or rather, it happens in two stages – first, a product with calcium is applied, and then with fluorine. This way the enamel becomes stronger for a longer period.

Features of deep fluoridation:

  • deeper penetration into the enamel layers;
  • greater strengthening after braces, as well as cleaning and whitening;
  • more significant reduction in sensitivity;
  • longer-lasting preventive effect;
  • two-stage application of products.

Frequently asked questions from patients

  • Does this hurt?

No, this procedure is painless. Fluoridation doesn’t even require any injections.

  • How long does the fluoridation procedure take?

The entire process takes between 10 and 20 minutes, depending on the number of teeth and the amount of product needed.

  • Is any preparation necessary before fluoridation?

Yes, professional teeth cleaning is recommended before fluoridation, as this will allow the product to penetrate the enamel even better.

Who is recommended to have fluoridation?

The fluoridation procedure is safe and painless.

This procedure can be performed on young children. In addition, the procedure allows you to protect the teeth of a pregnant woman. During pregnancy, fluoride and calcium are quickly washed out of the body, which causes the rapid development of caries. Pregnant women can perform the procedure from the second trimester. Patients with tooth sensitivity may also be recommended to undergo fluoridation.

Indications for dental fluoridation

Dental fluoridation is an effective method of preventing caries in young and adult patients. Fluoride has a positive effect on the condition of enamel and dentin, namely – it prevents tooth decay, inhibits the growth of harmful bacteria in the mouth. In pediatric dentistry and in adult dentistry, such a procedure is recommended if:

  • There is a tendency to develop caries;
  • Teeth are characterized by increased sensitivity;
  • Yellow plaque often accumulates above the gums.
  • Also, fluoridation is recommended during pregnancy, for preventive purposes for babies and after recent treatment of gum disease.

Contraindications

Like other manipulations, fluoridation also has contraindications for implementation. The procedure cannot be performed in the following cases:

  • Fluorosis: if there is an excess amount of fluoride in the body, alternative methods are used to strengthen tooth enamel;
  • Severe toxicosis during pregnancy;
  • Individual intolerance to substances containing fluoride;
  • Excessive fluoride content in the water in the area where the patient lives.

In modern dentistry, the procedure is prescribed only by an experienced doctor. A thorough diagnosis of the oral cavity is performed beforehand, the anamnesis is studied and a conversation is held with the patient. This algorithm of actions makes it possible to avoid factors that limit the implementation of fluoridation.

Methods of fluoridation of teeth

Performing fluoridation using the simple method involves the application of dental fluoride varnish — a preparation that promotes the formation of a protective film on the tooth surface.
Stages of the procedure:
  • Tooth preparation: thorough cleaning of the tooth surface and interdental spaces to remove dental deposits.
  • Warm air drying, which ensures the complete elimination of moisture and protection against saliva.
  • Remineralization.
  • Final drying.
In addition to fluoride varnish, the preparations may contain auxiliary substances. A full course includes 3–4 sessions — one procedure per week. It is recommended to repeat the fluoridation process twice a year. Eating and drinking after the manipulation is permitted after one hour. Deep remineralization involves the use of enamel-sealing preparations. This fluoridation method is significantly more effective and has a longer-lasting effect.
The main stages of the procedure:
  • Professional cleaning of the tooth surface using ultrasound;
  • Thorough drying: drying the enamel under a lamp is highly effective;
  • Application of a fluoride solution;

  • Drying;
  • Application of an agent containing copper and calcium hydroxide, which allows for the sealing of microcracks on the enamel;
  • Rinsing the mouth with warm water.

The technique is effective, completely painless, and safe, has no side effects, and is approved for pregnant women and toddlers.

A unique feature of the deep fluoridation method is the ability to consume food immediately after the manipulation.

How often can you fluoridate your teeth?

How often deep enamel fluoridation can be done depends on the condition of the enamel, the patient’s age, oral hygiene, and overall susceptibility to caries. For example, children are recommended to do it more often because their enamel is thinner and loses minerals faster.

However, it is worth noting that home fluoridation should not be confused with professional fluoridation. Home enamel care in the form of using toothpastes containing fluoride and rinses is not a full-fledged replacement for professional, and especially deep, fluoridation.

Frequently asked questions from patients

  • How often is it recommended to fluoridate children’s teeth?

Approximately once every 3-6 months, and especially more often during the formation of permanent teeth.

  • How often is it recommended to fluoridate teeth for adults?

Approximately 1-2 times a year, but more often if necessary and recommended by a doctor. For example, if there is significant tooth sensitivity and very weakened enamel.

  • What does the price of fluoridation of baby teeth depend on?

The price of fluoridation of baby teeth varies depending on the number of teeth. However, the price of such enamel strengthening is usually cheaper for children than for adults.

  • What does the price of dental fluoridation for adults depend on?

The price of dental fluoridation for adults depends on both the number of teeth and the type of procedure (regular or deep fluoridation).

Benefits of dental fluoridation

Modern dental manipulation has a number of positive aspects:

  • Protection of tooth enamel from destruction, its strengthening;
  • Reducing the risk of caries;
  • Eliminating the problem of tooth sensitivity;
  • Preventing the accumulation of pathogenic bacteria in the mouth;
  • Preventing the loss of fluoride and calcium from tooth enamel during pregnancy;
  • Increasing the resistance of the tooth surface to an acidic environment.

The procedure is most often recommended for children. Since in childhood the bone tissue is not yet strong enough, fluoridation allows you to strengthen it. This manipulation is one of the most effective ways to prevent caries. In addition, you should follow a healthy lifestyle. Proper nutrition, limited use or complete rejection of drinks with high acidity, proper and consistent oral hygiene, the use of special fluoride pastes allows you to keep your smile beautiful and healthy.

Does it make sense to fluoridate baby teeth?

Baby teeth are no less important than adult teeth (i.e. permanent teeth). It is the baby teeth that ensure the correct formation of the bite, because they help the jaw grow correctly. They seem to “hold” the place for permanent teeth in the future. Therefore, if a baby tooth falls out early, the permanent one may then grow crookedly. This explains the need to fluoridate baby teeth to strengthen and preserve them until they fall out on their own.

When exactly should baby teeth be fluoridated:

  • if the child has recurring or active cavities;
  • if braces are worn;
  • if there are already several white spots (this is a sign of demineralization – weakening of the enamel due to the loss of minerals);
  • after the eruption of the first permanent teeth (usually at 6-7 years).

Frequently asked questions from patients

  • Is it worth fluoridating baby teeth if they will fall out anyway

Yes, of course it makes sense, because strengthening baby teeth will allow permanent teeth to grow healthy later. This will form the correct bite.

  • Is deep fluoridation of teeth done in children?

Yes, both regular and deep fluoridation are done.
