What are the indications for remineralization?

Remineralization is necessary for early-stage tooth decay, tooth sensitivity, weakened or thin enamel, tooth stains, and after professional teeth whitening, to strengthen the teeth and protect them from decay.

How can you restore tooth enamel?

Tooth enamel is restored through remineralization, professional fluoride treatment, the use of special gels and toothpastes containing calcium and fluoride, and sometimes protective coatings or veneers to enhance the strength and aesthetics of the teeth.

What Is Tooth Remineralization? Its Benefits

When healthy, enamel is regularly replenished with minerals. These minerals help remove acids and harmful microorganisms from the tooth surface. When the acid-base balance is disrupted, the natural regeneration process is impaired. This leads to demineralization—that is, damage to the enamel layer. Enamel disease weakens the teeth’s defense against bacteria and also affects their appearance; they lose their attractiveness and luster. The following symptoms and visible changes may occur:

  • Sensitivity to cold, hot, sour, and salty foods increases;
  • The shade of the teeth changes;
  • Microcracks form.

In turn, beneficial components are also washed away through microcracks. Remineralization helps restore the protective enamel layer of the teeth.

Experts cite the following benefits of this procedure:

  • Provides effective prevention against tooth decay and eliminates early-stage cavities.
  • Improves the appearance of teeth—lightens discoloration by 4 shades and adds a healthy shine.
  • Eliminates sensitivity to temperature and acids and reduces pain.
  • Restores the balance of the oral microflora and promotes the replenishment of beneficial minerals.

This procedure is recommended in the following situations: the development of tooth decay, softening of dental tissue, demineralization beneath dental calculus, tooth sensitivity, hypoplasia, wedge-shaped defects, and tooth wear.

Types of Tooth Remineralization

Ways to Restore Enamel

Enamel restoration can occur in two ways:

  • Natural replenishment with natural components through the diet. This requires saliva;
  • Artificial restoration of the enamel’s integrity at a dental clinic.

Natural Fertilization at Home

You can restore your enamel to good condition at home. This method is effective in the early stages of damage. To ensure it works, you should follow a balanced diet. It’s important to consume foods rich in phosphorus, fluoride, and calcium. These include: fish and seafood; meat and liver; dairy products and milk; nuts; pumpkin and sunflower seeds; beans; and eggs. It is also recommended to give up harmful habits, take vitamins during the off-season, and use special oral hygiene products—toothpastes, mouthwashes, and gels.

Artificial method

Artificial tooth remineralization is performed in a dental office. It is carried out by a qualified dentist, who carefully selects the appropriate products and applies them to the tooth surface. Substances containing fluoride are used for this purpose. Fluoride varnish can be applied using the following methods:

  • With a brush;
  • Using a tray made from a tooth impression.

To consolidate the results, special fluoride-free preparations are applied. Electrophoresis with calcium and fluoride ions may also be prescribed to treat this condition. Another treatment approach is deep fluoridation to create a strong bond with the enamel layer. This coating lasts a long time and remains stable; the protective layer does not wash away.

Stages of Enamel Restoration

The most common and effective procedure in modern dentistry is the step-by-step treatment of each tooth with a substance containing minerals.

It is performed according to the following protocol:

  1. The teeth are cleaned with specialized toothpastes.
  2. The teeth are coated with a hydrogen peroxide solution. The solution concentration is 0.5–1%.
  3. The surface of the teeth is dried.

  1. Pads soaked in a 10% calcium gluconate solution are applied to each tooth. The procedure lasts 20 minutes, and the pads are replaced every 5 minutes.
  2. Application of a 0.2% sodium fluoride solution.

After the procedure, you should refrain from eating for 2 hours. A course of 15–20 sessions is recommended, depending on the extent of enamel damage. Sessions should be conducted daily, though a break every other day is acceptable. The final step involves applying a fluoride-containing varnish to seal the mineral layer.

This is a painless procedure designed to replenish the tooth enamel with essential elements: calcium, phosphorus, strontium, zinc, and ionized fluorides.

First, the dentist examines the condition of your teeth and makes an appropriate diagnosis, which will serve as the basis for recommending tooth remineralization.

Tooth Remineralization in Children

This procedure is acceptable for children, but with a restriction: it is recommended for children 6 years of age and older. Before this age, metabolic processes are still frequently changing, so it is not advisable to interfere with them.

Starting at age 6, it is safe to perform tooth enamel remineralization on children. This treatment replenishes the enamel with beneficial elements and helps prevent cavities.

The Role of Saliva in Remineralization

In this natural process, saliva replenishes the minerals that the enamel lacks to maintain its integrity. Saliva contains beneficial substances and coats the teeth with them, which has a positive effect on restoration. It also delivers essential components from food in the oral cavity to the enamel layer. It plays a key role because it promotes the natural mineralization of teeth.
