What is a panoramic dental X-ray?

A panoramic dental image, also known as an orthopantomogram (OPG), is an X-ray diagnostic method that visualizes both jaws in a single image. The procedure facilitates the early diagnosis of various issues, enabling an accurate medical assessment and the development of an optimal treatment plan.

Importantly, at MED-DEO, we use digital imaging. This ensures a lower radiation dose and maximum precision compared to older film-based technologies.

When a doctor prescribes an orthopantomogram

A panoramic dental X-ray may be recommended by a dentist in the event of specific complaints or for comprehensive diagnostics during a preventive check-up.

OPTG is often carried out:

before dental implantation, prosthetics or orthodontic treatment (installation of braces, aligners);
when planning wisdom tooth removal;
in case of suspicion of hidden inflammation and other pathological conditions;
to assess the position of the teeth and the formation of the maxillofacial system in childhood.

A panoramic jaw X-ray during a preventive dental check-up is a way to timely detect hidden issues that do not yet cause jaw discomfort but may require treatment in the future.

What a panoramic dental X-ray shows

An OPG allows the doctor to evaluate the dental arches, tooth roots, jawbone tissue, the position of wisdom teeth, and the temporomandibular joint.

Panoramic radiography results can reveal:

interdental caries;
periodontitis;
periodontal disease;
dental cyst;
inflammation of the bone tissue;
tooth impaction;
malocclusion.

An orthopantomogram helps detect problems at the early stages, when the disease does not yet manifest any symptoms.

When an OPG is sufficient, and when another type of diagnostic imaging is needed

An orthopantomogram in Kyiv is one of the most informative methods of initial dental diagnostics. However, in certain clinical cases, additional examinations may be required to establish an accurate diagnosis.

Here is when each of them is appropriate:

OPG (orthopantomogram) – provides a general overview of the entire maxillofacial system.
Targeted X-ray – allows for a detailed examination of a specific tooth or area.
TRG (teleradiography) – provides valuable information for bite analysis and orthodontic treatment planning.
3D CT – produces a clear, three-dimensional image of the teeth and bone tissue.

OPG or targeted X-ray

A panoramic dental X-ray and a targeted X-ray provide different results.

The first method provides a general overview. It is the standard procedure for an initial clinic visit or when preparing for implantation or surgical treatment.

The second method, in contrast, focuses on a specific tooth or a small area. It is prescribed when a detailed assessment of root canals is required, to detect hidden cavities, to verify treatment results, or to determine the cause of pain in a specific tooth.

OPG, cephalogram, or CT scan

All three methods represent advanced capabilities of modern dental practice. However, there are critical differences between them:

An OPG is a panoramic imaging scan. It is usually sufficient for initial diagnosis and treatment planning.
A cephalometric radiograph (TRG) is most commonly used in orthodontics. It helps analyze bite characteristics, jaw relationships, and the growth parameters of the maxillofacial system.
3D CT scanning provides the most detailed visualization, as it produces a three-dimensional image. It is particularly useful prior to dental implantation, complex extractions, or surgical procedures.

A jaw orthopantomogram is a quick procedure that takes just a few minutes, including preparation and equipment setup. The actual scanning process lasts no more than 10–20 seconds.

Once the image is captured, it is processed and stored in the SIDEXIS 4 software. This allows the doctor to access the data, analyze it immediately, and take it into account during the appointment.

Is it harmful to have a panoramic X-ray, and how often can it be repeated?

A digital orthopantomogram is a safe diagnostic method. Modern devices—such as the Dentsply Sirona Axeos installed at MED-DEO—utilize a reduced radiation dose, using only the minimum amount necessary to produce a high-quality image.

The dentist determines the number and frequency of panoramic X-rays on an individual basis. If necessary, the procedure can be repeated to assess intermediate stages of treatment.

during pregnancy, the examination is performed only after consulting a doctor;

Panoramic dental X-ray for a child

A panoramic dental X-ray may be prescribed for young patients when clinically indicated. It is performed for the following purposes:
