The process usually begins almost unnoticed, with a dark or chalky spot on the enamel surface that often causes only a brief reaction to sweet or cold foods. Over time, it worsens: the decay spreads into the dentin, a cavity forms, and noticeable sensitivity to hot and cold develops. Left untreated, the disease progresses to an advanced stage, bringing pain while chewing and significantly raising the risk of pulpitis.

Anesthesia. Before the procedure, injectable anesthesia is administered using Ubistesin (Solventum, Germany) or Septanest (Septodont, France). For patients who are afraid of needles, a topical numbing gel is applied first, making the injection nearly unnoticeable.

Tooth Isolation. The dentist places an OptraGate system or a dental dam — a special latex barrier that keeps the working area dry and ensures a reliable bond between the filling and the tooth structure.

Removal of Decayed Tissue. The dentist clears out the affected dentin from the cavity. At MED-DEO, this step is performed under the Smart Optic N microscope with up to ×25 magnification, allowing us to remove only the damaged areas with pinpoint accuracy while preserving healthy enamel.

The dentist selects the material and shade to match the tooth’s natural color, so the restoration blends in seamlessly.

Shaping and Polishing. In the final step, the filling is polished, the bite is checked, and even the smallest irregularities are smoothed out. A smooth surface collects less plaque, and a properly shaped contact point ensures comfortable chewing.

Cavity Treatment by Stage

Surface-Level Decay. When the damage is limited to the enamel, the dentist removes the affected tissue and places a composite filling. Treating surface-level decay takes around 30–40 minutes and is typically finished in one visit.
