When is osteoplasty needed?

The reasons for performing bone graft surgery (bone tissue replacement) may include:

Defects caused by periodontitis;
Damage to the bones or jaw resulting from trauma;
The extraction of a wisdom tooth, or the complications of other tooth extractions during which a significant volume of bone tissue was lost;
Situations where an implant surgeon assesses the amount or density of the available jawbone as insufficient for implantation, or determines that the implant will not withstand the functional load after prosthodontics;
Inadequate retention of dentures due to bone tissue atrophy.

Types of Bone Grafting (Osteoplasty) in Dentistry

Most often, two types of materials are used for the procedure: the patient’s own bone tissue or synthetic materials, though there are a few more types in total. The surgeon determines the best material to use based on each individual case:

Autogenous (Autografts): The patient’s own bone tissue;
Allogeneic (Allografts): Bone tissue from another human;
Xenogeneic (Xenografts): Bone tissue from an animal;
Alloplastic (Alloplasts): Synthetic analogs of natural tissue (artificial materials).

The osteoplasty operation will be performed in a manner determined by the surgeon based on the patient’s examination. When choosing the method, the location of the area to be augmented and its volume are decisive.

Stages of osteoplasty

A comprehensive examination is conducted. This includes taking a medical history, identifying indications and contraindications for the surgery, and selecting the types of implants. Visual and instrumental diagnostics are performed. Based on the examination results and the patient’s budget, the surgeon will select the graft material for osteoplasty and determine the specific type and course of the procedure.

Steps of the Procedure:

An incision is made at the surgical site under anesthesia.
The material is placed into the gum and attached to the target bone.
The space around the screw is filled (packed) with bone graft granules.
A protective membrane is secured in place.

Finally, the gums are sutured to prevent any subsequent displacement.
