Popular questions on the topic

How much does a nylon prosthesis cost?

A nylon denture costs an average of UAH 5,000 to UAH 15,000 in Kyiv today. But the price of a nylon denture depends on the number of artificial teeth in the denture. The price also depends on the number of additional dental procedures.

Is it possible to put nylon dentures in the complete absence of teeth?

It is possible to put nylon dentures in the complete absence of teeth. This will be a full-fledged removable restoration of teeth without implants. It is important that the bone tissue does not have atrophic areas, and the mucous membrane is healthy. The prosthesis itself is held due to a tight fit to the gums and palate.

What are the teeth on nylon dentures made of?

The teeth on nylon dentures are made of composite or high-quality acrylic plastic. The denture itself is made of soft, elastic and hypoallergenic nylon. All materials are aesthetic and match the natural color of a person’s teeth and gums.

What are nylon dentures?

Nylon dentures are flexible removable dentures typically used when one or more teeth are missing. They can also be used for complete tooth loss, though less frequently. Their base consists of artificial nylon gums that hold artificial teeth made of composite or acrylic materials

  • Fixed with nylon hooks (clasps).
  • Lightweight and soft, making them comfortable to wear.
  • Aesthetic and hypoallergenic.
  • Cause significantly less chafing during the adaptation period compared to alternatives.
  • Easy to remove and clean.Have a lifespan of approximately 5–6 years.
A translucent material with a natural shade, minimal pressure on the mucous membrane (compared to plastic options), and the absence of metal fasteners, combined with easy maintenance—this is what nylon dentures are all about. Simply put, a nylon denture matches the color of the gums, practically blending in with them, and does not flash like metal structures. It looks as discreet and attractive as possible when smiling or talking.
Sometimes, in cases of complete edentulism (total lack of teeth), there might be minor issues with denture retention, as it relies solely on the palate and gums for support. However, if some teeth are still present (partial edentulism), the nylon denture also grips onto the remaining teeth. This, in turn, provides slightly better retention and stability while wearing.

Pros and cons of nylon dentures

The main advantage, noted by patients themselves, is that nylon dentures look completely natural and beautiful both in real life and in photos. Additionally, the benefits of nylon dentures include:

  • Quite thin, flexible, and soft—making them comfortable to wear.
  • Non-allergenic, with no metal in the structure.
  • Fit well and do not exert heavy pressure on the gums.
  • Provide a fast adaptation period after placement.
  • Securely fixed without the need for dental adhesives.
  • Not brittle—less likely to break when dropped compared to alternatives.
  • Easy to maintain.
  • Suitable for both partial and complete tooth loss.

Some disadvantages of nylon dentures:

  • Not the most budget-friendly option.
  • Difficult to repair if they actually break.
  • Require simple but thorough and regular maintenance.
  • May have less stable retention, specifically when compared to other types of dentures.
  • Average lifespan—roughly 5 to 7–8 years.

It is worth noting separately that the price of a nylon denture in Kyiv is usually higher than that of an acrylic one. However, the cost of nylon dentures is lower than, for example, restoring a dentition with dental implants. On average, the price for such nylon/silicone dentures in Ukraine ranges from 5,000 to 15,000 UAH for partial ones, and from 8,000 to 25,000 UAH for complete ones.

Indications and contraindications

Nylon dentures are recommended in the following cases:

  • Partial or complete tooth loss combined with the need for a highly aesthetic restoration.
  • Loose abutment teeth—nylon serves as a gentler temporary option before the mobility is treated.
  • Intolerance or allergy to acrylic or metal.
  • Extremely thin or sensitive mucous membranes.
  • The need for a temporary denture, for example, after the removal of dental implants.

Such flexible nylon dentures are not recommended in cases of:

  • Severe gum inflammation.
  • Infectious processes in the oral cavity.
  • Highly mobile (loose) teeth.
  • Untreated caries on the abutment teeth.
  • Significant jawbone loss.
  • Rare allergic reactions to nylon denture materials.
  • Bruxism or involuntary teeth grinding (consultation with a doctor is required here).

Service life of soft dentures

On average, the lifespan of soft nylon dentures is 5–8 years. However, reaching the maximum limit of 7–8 years is only possible with proper care of both the denture and the oral cavity.

The lifespan also depends on chewing loads and diet, the presence of bad habits, and the timely adjustment of the denture. This involves routine dental check-ups every six months and early prevention of denture deformation if necessary. A complete replacement is typically recommended by a doctor right around the 5–8 year mark.

Over time, a removable nylon denture accumulates plaque and bacteria, much like natural teeth. Therefore, the recommendations for regular care are as follows:

  • Remove the denture daily.
  • Rinse it thoroughly under warm water.
  • Never use boiling water.
  • Clean it regularly with either a soft-bristled toothbrush without toothpaste or a specialized denture brush.
  • Soak the denture in a special disinfecting solution once a day.
  • Rinse it in warm water once more before putting it back in.

Types of nylon dental prostheses

There are different types of nylon dentures depending on the variety of their designs, and each type serves a specific purpose:

  1. Partial dentures – required when the dentition needs to be partially restored, meaning a few teeth are missing rather than all of them. They are typically intended for long-term wear.
  2. Complete dentures – used for the long-term restoration of the dentition when all teeth are missing. In this case, the entire dental arch is replaced.
  3. Clasp (bugel) dentures with nylon elements – used for partial tooth loss and feature a special clasp or connector made of the same nylon material, serving as an extension of the denture itself. It acts as a sturdy additional framework to provide even better retention in certain cases. This option is also designed for long-term wear.
  4. Partial mini-dentures – usually required when only 1–2 teeth are missing. They are small and compact, most often used as a temporary solution before the next stage of prosthodontics or implant placement.

When choosing a specific type of denture, the doctor takes into account the number of missing teeth, the condition of the abutment teeth, and the health of the jaw and oral cavity. The patient’s bite, daily chewing loads, and aesthetic expectations for their future smile are also considered.
