TMJ arthritis is an inflammatory condition of the lower jaw joint that causes pain during jaw movement.

The inflammation affects all tissues of the joint — including the condylar branches, cartilage surfaces, and meniscus. In advanced stages, TMJ arthritis leads to joint deformation, impaired jaw function, and severe pain. Left untreated over time, it can take a serious toll on a patient's emotional wellbeing and may cause difficulties with eating, speaking, and breathing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is temporomandibular joint (TMJ) arthritis?

TMJ arthritis is an inflammatory condition affecting the joint that connects the lower jaw to the skull. The inflammation can be either acute or chronic and requires timely medical attention.

What are the symptoms of TMJ inflammation?

The main symptoms of TMJ inflammation include pain in or around the joint, grinding or clicking sounds when opening the mouth, limited jaw mobility, swelling or tenderness in the joint area, and — in some cases — headaches or ear pain.

What causes TMJ inflammation?

TMJ inflammation can be triggered by jaw trauma, chronic jaw tension or teeth grinding (bruxism), infections, arthritic conditions, malocclusion, or chronic muscle stress from ongoing strain on the jaw.

How can pain and swelling from TMJ inflammation be relieved?

To ease pain and swelling associated with TMJ inflammation, you can apply cold or warm compresses to the jaw, avoid excessive chewing and hard foods, and take anti-inflammatory or pain-relief medications as directed by your doctor.

How Is TMJ Arthritis Treated?

Treatment for TMJ arthritis depends on its form and is determined by the doctor following a thorough examination and identification of the underlying causes.

Acute TMJ arthritis is managed first and foremost by immobilizing the joint — using a sling-type bandage and an interocclusal splint. During this phase, only liquid food is permitted. The goal of treating traumatic arthritis is to relieve pain and promote the resorption of blood within the joint, ultimately restoring full joint function. To achieve this, analgesics and local cryotherapy (cold application) are used for the first few days, followed by approximately six days of regular UHF (ultra-high frequency) therapy. At the doctor’s discretion, compresses, mud therapy, and ozocerite therapy may also be prescribed.

When traumatic arthritis progresses to a chronic form, the treatment approach shifts to ultrasound therapy, massage of the masticatory muscles, ozocerite therapy, paraffin therapy, and myogymnastics (targeted jaw muscle exercises).

Rheumatic and rheumatoid arthritis are successfully managed using conservative methods, including steroidal and non-steroidal medications as well as antibacterial agents. Oral cavity rehabilitation and dental prosthetics are also required as part of the treatment.

Purulent (septic) TMJ arthritis most commonly develops as a complication of a neglected case and requires immediate surgical intervention — incision and drainage of the affected joint. At the conclusion of treatment, physiotherapy is prescribed, including UHF therapy, compresses, diathermy, and electrophoresis.

TMJ arthritis can progress rapidly and demands prompt medical attention. Treating advanced-stage cases requires significantly more effort and time, and is considerably harder on the patient. Med-Deo strongly recommends not putting off a visit to your doctor.

Causes of TMJ Arthritis

The most common causes of temporomandibular joint arthritis are:

  • Infection
  • Previous trauma
  • Dental and jaw abnormalities (malocclusion and related structural issues)

TMJ arthritis can present in either an acute or chronic form. If left untreated, it may progress to a purulent (septic) stage, which is both more severe and significantly more difficult to manage.
